Good but limited knowledge of Autism

Accident and emergency services
October 8, 2018
The Doctors and Nurses in A & E are very good, but they have no knowledge of knowledge of Autism. They do not understand the condition and the challenges. For example, one of the nurses wanted to check my son ears and I asked her to wait one minute to allow him to get used to the environment, but she just went ahead to check him which made my son anxious. At other times, they ask him to open his mouth and yet I have told them that he does not understand because he does not understand words. The Doctor has to physically open his mouth because he will not respond to instructions. They need to improve their knowledge and trust that what carers are telling them is the truth.

I am not sure what they are doing

My husband had a rare condition. My daughter, who was born immediately after my husband died, has also been diagnosed with the same rare condition as her dad. She was diagnosed when she was nine months old. Since then, she is being treated by Children’s Hospital. Although, I am happy about the care the hospital provides, I feel that they need to improve how they share information with carers. They could be prodding her for no reason for all I know, as I am not sure what they are doing. I had to flip out at them to start sharing information with me about her care.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments. I am sorry to hear that communications have not been to our usual standard. Staff should always explain to parents/carers and the child what they are doing. If ever this doesn't happen we would encourage you to ask the staff to explain. If you would like to share more specific details with us please do contact us via the PALs team (Patient Advise & Liaison) 0121 333 8403, we can then make the team/staff involved in your daughters care, so any improvements can be made. Best Wishes.

My son has been cared for at Birmingham Children Hospital for brain tumour cancer. I can’t fault them, they have been fantastic throughout my son’s treatment. This includes a brain tumour operation.

Missed diagnosis of liver cancer.

Hepatology
November 28, 2017
The hospital ignored my daughter's symptoms for the best part of a year, making me feel like a neurotic mother and her feel like she was making her symptoms up. she had long standing liver disease due to a genetic condition but subsequently got cancer of the liver. This was initially picked up on a scan in February 2017 but was missed. we were told in March, there was nothing wrong with her and they would see her again in 2 years time. It was only because I persevered and phoned the professor dealing with my daughter nearly weekly at times (she refused to speak to me until July). Her manner was appalling throughout, even giving me the cancer diagnosis over a telephone. I am extremely concerned that other children will be missed with a cancer diagnosis with how we were treated. We have never received an apology and no investigation has been carried out.

Prolonged wait in A&E

Accident and emergency services
November 9, 2017
I attempted to have my daughter seen at BCH A&E on two occasions, Saturday and Monday. We were attending because she needed an X-ray for suspected broken finger. She was triaged and it was agreed she needed X-ray but wouldn’t be sent to X-ray without seeing doctor. We waited for two hours on the Saturday only to be told (with no apology and rather aggressively) that it would be a further five hour wait ‘at least’. Assuming this was an exceptionally busy day I elected to strap her finger and return on Monday morning. I was shocked to be informed that they were still predicting a 5 hour wait at minimum. I have no problem waiting for such services but feel the triage system for hospital is old fashioned and needs to have less time consuming pathways. We elected to attend a different A&E at city hospital where we were triaged and send straight to X-ray, saw a doctor and returned home within one hour.

Important first appointment to discuss daughter's coeliac disease
We had a positive appointments at doctors, blood test confirmed coeliac disease and we then had to wait 5 months for hospital appointment, which ended up being in the wrong department! We now have to wait again for another appointment
