Community Engagement Officers

Salary: £22,183 – £24,491 (pro rata if part-time)

Location: We have posts available in Solihull and in Birmingham. The location to be agreed at interview.  This post involves working in the community and therefore cannot be conducted online only.  

Hours: Part-time or full-time (35 hours per week). Occasional weekend and evening work will be required.

Healthwatch Birmingham and Healthwatch Solihull believe everyone deserves the best possible care. We fight health inequalities by giving people a voice in improving the health and social care services they use, and work with services to ensure long-lasting benefits for patients. We have recently supported members of the Somali community, young people with mental health issues and people with visual impairments to call for change. We also run an Information and Signposting service helping people to find the best care and support they need for their personal situation.

We are completely independent of the NHS and social care services.

Job description

We aim to reach every community in this diverse region. As Community Engagement Officer you will go into settings such as hospitals and care homes and run our stall at events run by our partner community organisations, to collect people’s feedback about the health and social care services they use.

With an innovative mind, great communication skills and a commitment to making a difference in the local community, you will hear what people really think about health and social care and help create real change for everyone in Birmingham and Solihull.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Arrange and co-ordinate community-based activity to hear people’s views.
2. Supervise Healthwatch volunteers at community engagement events.
3. Organise engagement activity with other voluntary and third sector organisations to reach the most vulnerable communities. 
4. Record feedback collected at events.

Required skills and experience

Essential

• Confidence in speaking face to face, with the ability to communicate with, and show empathy to, a wide range of different types of people.
• Comfortable visiting settings such as hospitals and care homes.
• The skill to explore, understand and record people’s experiences of health and social care by completing our feedback forms with members of the public.
• ICT literate and familiar with a range of basic software packages.
• The ability to effectively plan, organise and run our stall at community events
• Self-motivated.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team.

Desirable

• Ability to manage operational challenges.
• Experience of working in a flexible and fast-paced environment.
• Experience of event management desirable.
• Experience of working with volunteers.
• Car driver.
