We need more staff and better conditions

March 11, 2020
In February I gave birth at Birmingham women’s hospital. I started my labour on the midwife-led unit and due to foetal distress was transferred to the delivery unit to give birth. My baby had a dropping heart rate and meconium in the waters. The midwife who transferred and stayed with me for the birth was amazing but the hospital was noticeably short staffed and very busy. It took a long time for a doctor to be present for the assisted delivery and then same afterwards for me to be stitched. The staff discussed those other emergencies needed to be attended to and while remained calm it was obvious that we need more staff and better conditions. I was lucky as there were no complications.

Thank you for taking the time to provide such detailed feedback for us, though we are sorry to see you had to wait to be joined by a doctor for your delivery. We're pleased to know that the midwife who took care of you was so reassuring and supportive, taking the time to provide the service we all strive to provide for our patients. We are always working hard to ensure all of our patients are well looked after, and thank you for your suggestion of more staff needed to improve on things. We are very glad to know you went home well, and wish you all the best in the future. Best Wishes, the Patient Experience Team.

Post natal care horrific

Pre natal care was excellent.
I had a C Section - horrific. I picked up an infection - post natal care horrific.
Was transferred to a hospital over 30 miles away but was forced to go.

C Section went wrong - my children weren't breathing properly and they were not considered ill enough to stay at womens. I did not want to go to the other hospital but had no choice - so I was far away from family and friends and this meant I couldn't bond properly with my children, as I was trying to breastfeed.
My control over my own body and that of my children was taken away - I felt dismissed as though I didn't matter.
This is making us consider not having any more children - I would need specialist care if I did because of my health issues. The thought of being shipped off again is not worth it.
Care was excellent before C section.

unhappy with parking and inducing wait time

Breast clinic today - which has been fine. Staff OK. Needed coins for parking- change machine out of order. Could have had a big sign up saying no change given- go to the cashiers- cashiers don't open until 9am. Our appointment was at 9 so this was closed.

In December care wasn't as good- pregnant women waiting for days to be induced- I was an emergency so got induced quickly- staff were good overall.

Hospital pharmacy- I had too many tablets so took them to the boots pharmacy- they wouldn't take them. told me to take them to another pharmacy- not good enough.

Staff and midwives were really good overall. Its the little things that put you in a bad mood before even getting to the appointment.

Very good. Staff really nice. Student’s doctors are not the best. Could be better and new doctors don’t seem very confident or knowledgeable. Prefer to be examined by the doctor or nurse who have years of experience.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We encourage our student doctors to be involved, as this is the way they learn best, however, we are more than happy to have any of our patients share that they would rather be seen by a more experienced doctor - please do share this when you next come into the hospital, and we will ensure you are well taken care of. Best Wishes, the Patient Experience Team.
