Too slow to issue repeat prescriptions
December 14, 2024
I am a type 1 diabetic, reliant on insulin and Abbott Freestyle 2+ sensors. Over the last 6 months it has become increasingly difficult to obtain repeat prescriptions. First, they stopped using the NHS app, forcing patients to send email requests. Now, they are often taking more than a week to issue a prescription, and then it is often short of items. I request all my repeats in good time but, not having had the sensors I had requested more than a week ago, I had to get an emergency prescription from the pharmacy this morning after my last sensor failed 6 days early.
Appointment availability is good

I recently moved to this practice. The staff are very helpful and the appointment availability is good.
Won't give me the medication I want.

I'm a platinum patient but they won't prescribe the medication I want for my illness when I ask for it. They say they can't get it but my friend has the exact same one so not sure why they don't want to give it to me.
Very helpful staff

1 check up in 20 years.

What is a GP. We now have to fill in a form online to even try to book an appointment. There are many elderly people who cannot do this unaided. They can pick up the phone and speak to a human. My husband was told by the cardiac rehab nurse having had a stent fitted that he needed to see his GP about upping medication, so he went in to make the appointment as instructed by the nurse only to be told, you can't. You have to book online and we have nothing available. They are advertising for new patients and they are not seeing the ones they have. As a coeliac, I am supposed to have an annual MOT to check vitamin levels etc, I have had one in 20 years and I had to push for that by quoting government guidelines.
The nurse comes out to take bloods.

I take my dad there once every 3 months and they are quite good. They send the nurse out to take bloods for him which is good too.
They have been okay

I don't use them that often as I don't need to. I have most of my care at the hospital. They have been okay the times I have used them.
Very rude

I've just lost my dad and needed me that was not on my app
Difficult to get an appointment.

It is so difficult to get an appointment even when the doctor texts me and asks me to make an appointment. Why can't he send me an appointment in the same way as the hospitals do? The receptionists just repeat 'Phone at 8am tomorrow', even they cannot make a forward appointment. They write rude notes in my notes when I make what I think are sensible suggestions and make me seem as if I've been impolite. The hospital doctor told me to speak to my gp but I can't.
Getting a GP appointment is very difficult

Getting a GP appointment is very difficult. Even when the doctor sends a text to say he wants to see me, I'm the one who has to phone the surgery at 8am and take a chance of seeing just any doctor and at any surgery in the group - the latest fiasco was being offered appointments any time on a Saturday but on the other side of Birmingham. I have no access to a car.
Follow up with the same doctor seems impossible so I have to start explaining things from the beginning. For some people it does not matter, if they go with something different and acute each time. I have chronic conditions and it's not good enough to say that any doctor can read my notes.
I saw a doctor last year but cannot get a follow up appointment after the hospital appointment he sent me to. I cannot discuss the latest drugs.
I want to see (not just speak to) my doctor but I can't face the rigmarole.
