Impact Report: Improving patient and public involvement in adult social care

Improvements are being made to hear and act upon the experiences of nursing and residential home residents, their relatives and carers to drive the quality of care in Birmingham.
Healthwatch Birmingham visited residents in homes last year to listen to their experiences and understand how their feedback was listened to and used by service providers. We used this to respond to Birmingham City Council’s Adult Social Care Commissioning Strategy consultation.
As a result of our initial reports, the Council and its funded providers are improving their process to hear the views of residents. This includes the Council considering independent reviews of resident’s involvement, facilitated opportunities to support providers to listen to people’s experiences through Healthwatch Birmingham and agreed pathways to escalate concerns to the Council.

These changes should result in better opportunities for residents, their families and carers to feedback and influence service’s decision making and ultimately drive improvement in the quality of care for local people.
