How do you access help in an emergency?

January 26, 2018
My experience was horrible. You wait two months for appointments - how are you meant to access quick help when appointments are not regular? How can you have a diagnosis and then be told it isn’t right but still not get the right support even on medication? If it isn’t working you still have to wait two months plus to ask for different medication or help to solve the problem.

If I’m having a bad day I can’t wait to be seen. Where do I go in an emergency? I’ve called them in an emergency and they say there’s no doctors and they don’t give me other places to go. I don’t like my male doctor but if I want another male doctor I need to travel all the way to Longbridge.

I didn’t get any help filling in the personal income payments (PIP) form even though I am autistic. I asked my Mental Health Team to refer me to anger management – they didn’t. Mental Health told me I needed a social worker but I’ve never had any contact since.

Sorry to hear that you feel you haven't been able to access support quickly. We do operate a duty system in our community hubs so that you can access urgent support in between appointments should you need it. We also have a Crisis team, which you can contact if you are experiencing a mental health emergency - they can be contacted via our main telephone number 0300 300 0099.

If you would like us to look into your experiences in more detail, please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0121 333 8403 or bwc.pals@nhs.net.

If you're going to take on the responsibility of adult services through the ages of 18-25 you need to be aware of issues that affect that age range. I'm used to adult services and regular care, being dropped to only having acsess to duty was a big shock. Staff aren't aware of issues and diagnosis that are given to over eighteens as they've only ever worked with kids. As a 24year old with a serious diagnosis they didn't know what to do, what to offer so suggested 6 weeks of councilling- when the NICE guidelines clearly state that any intervention less than three months will make my condition worse. Staff have apologised and have told me to complain. I made a complaint and beause I've complained the duty worker refuses to speak to me. This has left me with a serious mental health condition and no support at all. This leads to a suicide attempt and having to drop out of university and move back home, where I'm back on a 2 year waiting list to get a CPN and any form of therapy. This wouldn't be the situation if staff at FTB were adiquitly trained to work with 18-25 year old

Pathological demand avoidance (PDA) is diagnosed in one part of Birmingham but not in another

Thanks for your feedback on our service.

We understand that this situation can be quite confusing and wanted to explain why it may be the case that Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) has been diagnosed in one area of the city but not another.

Our Autism Spectrum Disorder team works according to the guidance from the National Autistic Society, which considers PDA as a particular presentation of behaviours for some people on the Autism Spectrum. When we complete an assessment for a patient where Autism is the diagnostic outcome, we will then go on to describe the strengths and areas of need for this young person, which will include a description of anxiety and behaviour, if this is an issue. This is where we would describe presentations that others might call PDA. We don’t call this PDA because of the newness of this categorisation within the Autism Spectrum. PDA is not included in the standard diagnostic classifications, which will influence whether clinicians use this as a standalone diagnosis. While some clinicians may be confident to make this diagnosis by making use of research evidence and practice guidance, many will not. This may lead to PDA being diagnosed in some areas but not others.

If there's anything we can do to improve your experience with Forward Thinking Birmingham, do please get in touch - forwardthinkingbirmingham.org.uk/contact
