Midwives were excellent & brilliant aftercare

Maternity
November 20, 2019
Early stages of labour – moved from delivery suite to birth centre as told a room in the birth centre had become available however we were left in the retreat room for two hours with no checks made by midwife despite having asked for more pain relief. Despite initial experience, once in established labour the midwives were excellent, aftercare in ward 4 was also brilliant, and lot of support was provided for breastfeeding. Discharge took a long time (3 hours) when I was unnecessarily taking up a bed. Also didn’t given my medication on time, so had to come back for them (antibiotics/iron tablets/pain relief). Discharge notes also had errors in them.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. I was sorry to note that your initial experience in the retreat room was poor, but pleased to see our service improved for you. I'm happy to see that Ward 4 were able to provide such great support for breastfeeding. I am sorry that the discharge process did not go well, if you would like to discuss it further with us, you can contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0121 333 8403 or bwc.pals@nhs.net. Strange appointment

Gynaecology
November 8, 2019
Came for a follow up appointment. Took five minutes standing up queuing to even record I had arrived. They've updated the waiting room, which makes more space, but it was still very crowded, and hardly any seats. The one I had to sit in was sticky. There's a sign to say you can ask for water to drink, but the staff were so busy, it was hard to approach them.
A nurse updated the whiteboard to indicate waiting times were over an hour, but no one said at sign in, and she didn't say out loud to the room, which would have been helpful.
Finally got called in to see consultant, who was very abrupt and rushed through with the appointment. He interrupted it to take a call on his mobile. He gave a lot of information very quickly, and then suggested treatment options I'd already tried, so he didn't seem to have read any of my file.He dismissed this and said I should just take it up with my GP instead. I felt very rushed and that I couldn't ask the questions I needed too. I had to sit in the reception for a while after just to regather my thoughts I'd felt so rushed.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback of your experience at Birmingham Women's Hospital. We are deeply saddened to read your comments of your visit. We are sorry to hear that you had to wait a while for your arrival to be logged on our system and that you felt your appointment was rushed and the clinician had not read your patient record. It is concerning to read that you felt the consultant was abrupt with you and answered a call on his mobile during your consultation. We are also disappointed to hear that you felt the waiting room environment was of poor standard and that you were not able to access water to drink.

We can see that you felt compassion was not shown during your consultation and we would be keen to discuss this with you and help resolve your concerns. It would also help us to identify the relevant department and clinician so they can be made aware of your poor experience and look at what improvements need to be made. You can contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0121 333 8403 or bwc.pals@nhs.net. We look forward to hearing from you, best wishes, Patient Experience Team.

Discharged without fully recovered

Maternity
October 31, 2019
I had a C-Section three weeks ago and I am not very happy with the aftercare received. This is my third visit and still having the same problem. They are always in a hurry to discharge patients without making sure that they have fully recovered or not. I would have fully recovered if I was in hospital for few more days.
